Southern Medical University (SMU), formerly the First Military Medical University, was founded in 1951 and became one of China's premier medical universities in 1978. Renamed in 2004 after being transferred to Guangdong Province, SMU is one of only eight universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to run an 8-year pilot medical education program.
Located at the foot of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, SMU spans two campuses covering 168
hectares, with a construction area of 84.5 hectares. It boasts five state-level key academic
disciplines, with its clinical medicine program ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI. SMU
offers 99 master’s programs, 75 doctoral programs, and 7 post-doctoral research centers,
ranking first in Guangdong Province for doctoral degree authorization among medical
universities.
SMU maintains partnerships with 38 institutions across 19 countries, facilitating robust
academic exchanges. Each year, over 400 international exchanges take place, and more than
400 students have pursued advanced studies abroad in recent years, solidifying SMU’s
reputation as a global leader in medical education and research.
